Wastewater treatment is a process used to remove pollutants in wastewater from various facilities (domestic, commercial, and/or industrial) to convert it into more useful products. Waste Water Treatment Plants (WWTP) are usually composed of preliminary, primary, secondary, and tertiary treatment. Wastewater is subjected to a preliminary treatment to reduce its quality into biodegradable waste before it undergoes primary and secondary treatment, where main pollutants (e.g. BOD, COD, TSS, Oil and Grease, Nutrients) are removed. Such process yields wasted sludge as a by-product, which can be used as a soil conditioner. Tertiary treatment is applied to further convert the treated effluent into more usable forms of water reuse, which can be used for non-contact applications such as flushing, washing and gardening. In essence, wastewater treatment upscales wastewater into more valuable forms, instead of directly discharging it to receiving bodies of water, which will cause harm to health and environment.
